What’s Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a computer operating system that can run on almost any computer and distributed as free and open source software. Ubuntu contains all needed and free applications, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools

  • Open Source
Ubuntu is built around the ideals that software should be available free of charge and committed to the principles of open source software development. Ubuntu will always be free to use, share and develop, and there is no extra fee for the "enterprise edition"

  • Up-to-Date
Ubuntu aims to be able to release the latest and greatest of today’s software. The new version is released regularly every 6 months, each release is supported for at least 18 months. By focusing on quality, Ubuntu produces a durable computing environment that is suitable for use in both home and business environments.

  • Easily Installed
Ubuntu has the powerful package management system which allows easy installation and clean removal of programs. Once installed the system is immediately ready-to-use. On the desktop, there are a full set of productivity, internet, drawing and graphics applications, and games. The graphical installer is enabled to get up and running quickly and easily. A standard installation should take less than 25 minutes.

Ubuntu 10.04

The Ubuntu version number comes from the year and month of the release. The latest version was released in April 2010, so its version number is 10.04 LTS. The latest 10.04 release of Ubuntu, code named "Lucid Lynx", is a special “long term support” (LTS) release which will be supported for an extended period on both desktops and servers.
